On 16 October, in celebration of the International Day of Rural Women, the Women's Centres of Olías del Rey and Bargas organised a well-received excursion to Madrid. The group first visited the Casa de México, where they enjoyed guided tours of a vibrant exhibition detailing the tradition of the Altar de Muertos, a significant cultural practice in Mexico. The visit concluded with a showcase of photographs and artworks by Mexican female artists.
After lunch, the group attended a dramatized exhibition titled “A besos entiendo, a veces no,” focused on the resilient and creative spirit of the renowned painter Frida Kahlo. This sensory experience revealed new aspects of Kahlo's life and work, offering attendees a unique insight into her artistic legacy.
The event was made possible through the active participation of local women's associations, including the Asociación de Mujeres “El Amanecer,” Asociación de Mujeres de Olías Sur, and Asociación de Mujeres A.M.I.G.A. de Bargas.
The International Day of Rural Women, observed on 15 October, serves to highlight the often-overlooked social influence of women in rural areas, who play a crucial role in the cohesion and development of their communities. These women organise events, engage in associations, and help preserve local traditions and culture. Their ability to unite people is essential for the survival of many small communities.
Art also plays a significant role in this struggle, as rural women are the guardians of unique artisanal traditions that represent the cultural identity and heritage of their communities. This empowers them with a voice in society and positions them as agents of change, promoting values such as equality and justice.
