Roman amphitheatre enhances accessibility with nearly €90,000 investment

The Consortium of the Historic-Artistic and Archaeological Monumental City of Mérida, which includes the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Sports, has implemented improvements to the accessibility of the Roman amphitheatre. This project allows for the expansion of visitable routes and facilitates access to areas that were previously not part of the usual itinerary.

The intervention has included the installation and enhancement of various walkways that connect different sectors of the monument, creating new routes aimed at providing a more complete and accessible visit. The budget allocated for this initiative was nearly €90,000, developed under principles of integration, conservation, and respect for the archaeological site.

The Minister of Culture, Tourism and Sports, Laureano León, visited the newly established routes and highlighted that, thanks to this initiative, "visitors will be able to explore new areas, spend more time, and better understand the function and monumentality of this space." León emphasised the importance of making Extremadura's heritage accessible to both locals and tourists.

He also noted that today's tourists seek "experiences," making it essential to "enhance our heritage not as isolated monuments, but as a collection of itineraries and synergies that allow us to leverage the potential of our historical legacy." Among the notable elements incorporated into the route is the viewing platform located above the Puerta Pompa, an emblematic space that offers a privileged perspective of the monumental complex and aids in understanding the function of this building during the Roman era.

The initiative includes protective and safety measures to appreciate this space without interfering with its contemplation. New itineraries have been established to access areas related to the Puerta Pompa, improving the connection between different parts of the monument. These enhancements provide visitors with greater possibilities for exploration, contributing to prolonging their stay and enriching their visit experience.

The Mayor of Mérida, Antonio Rodríguez Osuna, and the director of the consortium, Félix Palma, also highlighted the significance of these actions for the tourist appeal of the Roman amphitheatre.
