María Molina, artistically known as ‘Maricuela’, delivered a captivating children's storytelling session this morning at the Teatro Emilio Gavira in Alcázar de San Juan. This event was part of the municipality's reading promotion activities in celebration of Library Month, attracting sixth-grade students from various local schools.
The local councillor for culture, Cristina Perea, attended the event to support the artist. Under the title ‘Historias de risa’, Maricuela showcased a vibrant performance characterised by humour, physical expression, and colourful storytelling, blending her own narratives with adapted traditional tales and references to renowned children's authors such as Gianni Rodari and Roberto Piumini.
“I have been telling stories since 1992, working through humour and clowning,” Maricuela said before her performance. “With stories, there is no fourth wall; I love the connection with the audience and the magic of bare words with minimal staging, something that has connected with people of all ages for centuries.”
Councillor Perea highlighted Maricuela's diverse background and her contributions to municipal reading initiatives, stating, “It is a true pleasure to have Maricuela in Alcázar. Her stories, which stem from tradition, her own creations, and distant lands, stand out for their humour and physicality, winning over the children. We appreciate her involvement in our reading promotion activities for schools.”
Following the children's performance, Maricuela's talent will be showcased later in the evening at the Conservatorio Profesional de Música, where she will present ‘Historias de Pueblos’, the second event in the Oral Storytelling Cycle for Adults ‘Encuentros’. Scheduled for 20:00, this performance is aimed at adult audiences and features narratives set in her creative universe. Perea reminded the public that tickets for this session must be purchased in advance at the Teatro Emilio Gavira box office.
