The Santa María parish has transformed its façade into a vibrant display of light and colour with the videomapping show 'Light and Faith through Time', projected to commemorate the 800th anniversary of its foundation. The spectacle highlights key moments in the church's history, including the baptism of Miguel de Cervantes and the construction of the Virgin's chapel, renowned for its distinctive Baroque tiles.
The first projection was attended by José Manuel Caballero, the second vice president of the Castilla-La Mancha government, who was welcomed by the mayor, Rosa Melchor, alongside several municipal council members and the parish priest, Francisco Javier Quevedo.
Rosa Melchor described the event as 'a true marvel', emphasising that it not only celebrates 800 years of the Santa María la Mayor parish but also the history of Alcázar, which began in the Santa María neighbourhood. She congratulated Francisco Javier Quevedo, representing the committee organising the anniversary events, and expressed gratitude to the Castilla-La Mancha government for funding this 'beautiful project'.
José Manuel Caballero remarked on the 'impressive' experience of seeing, hearing, and feeling the history of Santa María la Mayor through such innovative technology. He thanked local administrations and the parish for their contributions, stating that this collaboration will foster future partnerships to 'value what is important, reflecting our origins and identity'.
Parish priest Francisco Javier Quevedo also expressed his amazement at the spectacle, calling it 'incredible' and noting that it is significant to do something for the first time after 800 years. He highlighted the positive impact it had on the audience, describing it as a true work of art. He extended his heartfelt thanks to public institutions for their support in celebrating the temple's octocentennial, particularly to the Junta de Comunidades de Castilla-La Mancha for financing the project.
