Fuerteventura to host the 35th canary islands championship of traditional sailing boats

Fuerteventura will be the venue for the 35th Canary Islands Championship of Traditional Sailing Boats, taking place in Puerto del Rosario from 24 October to 1 November. The bay will serve as the focal point for this prestigious event, which will see participation from various traditional sailing boats classified through their respective island competitions.

The championship will feature eight races across four days—24, 25, and 31 October, as well as 1 November—hosting a total of 31 boats from the archipelago. Participants include eight from Lanzarote, four from La Graciosa, nine from Gran Canaria, and eight from Fuerteventura.

The event was officially presented at the Juan Ismael Art Centre in Puerto del Rosario, attended by key figures including Lola García, President of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura; Lorena Hernández, General Director of Indigenous Sports for the Government of the Canary Islands; and Luis González, the island's Sports Councillor. Local councillors David de León and Gleiber Carreño, along with Juan Monzón, Sports Councillor of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, were also present.

Lola García expressed her enthusiasm for the event, stating, “Traditional sailing is more alive than ever on our island. Over the coming weeks, we will witness a high-level competition in a sport that is so important for our islands.” She praised the efforts of the Canary Islands Federation in organising the event and highlighted the increase in female participation and youth engagement in the sport.

Lorena Hernández acknowledged the contributions of the federations and institutions involved, noting the pride in having a female team from each participating island. “It is a source of pride to have a female team from each of the participating islands and to continue working to ensure this tradition is not lost,” she remarked.

David de León, representing the Puerto del Rosario City Council, thanked the federations and clubs for their involvement in hosting the competition. He wished good luck to all participants and hoped for favourable weather conditions for the races.

Luis Toledo, President of the Canary Islands Federation of Traditional Sailing Boats, emphasised the cultural and sporting significance of the championship, now in its 35th edition. “This is an opportunity for our athletes to compete with the best and to keep our culture and identity alive, especially among young people,” he stated.

Pascual Perdomo, President of the Insular Federation, expressed his satisfaction at Fuerteventura hosting the championship again and thanked the support from institutions and local clubs. “We are very proud to celebrate this championship in Fuerteventura once more and to continue involving our clubs and athletes,” he added.

The 35th Canary Islands Championship of Traditional Sailing Boats is organised by the Canary Islands Federation of Traditional Sailing Boats, alongside the Insular Federations of Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, and Gran Canaria. The event is supported by the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, the Government of the Canary Islands through the General Directorate of Indigenous Sports, the Puerto del Rosario City Council, and various local sponsors.
