The 43rd National Zarzuela Week continued with a performance designed for younger generations. The Tomás Barrera theatre hosted 'Cuéntame la zarzuela, bro', a production by Materlírica España intended to bring the lyrical genre closer to local students.
This innovative presentation of zarzuela incorporated music, humour, digital projections, and a contemporary staging. It reinterpreted classic stories in a way that resonates with today’s youth, addressing themes such as identity, diversity, love, social pressure, and social media.
During the performance, well-known works from the genre were featured, including 'El barberillo de Lavapiés', 'La Gran Vía', and 'Doña Francisquita', allowing students to experience some of the most iconic melodies.
A notable aspect of the show was the audience participation. Performers broke the fourth wall, interacting with spectators who became active participants in the experience rather than mere observers. This approach aimed to spark interest among younger audiences in a genre traditionally associated with older generations.
