two men arrested for attempted burglary in gijón

Local police in gijón/Xixón arrested two men last night around 21:40 for their involvement in an attempted burglary at a residence on avenida del Jardín Botánico. The suspects fled the scene and hid in the río Peñafrancia, where they were found following a significant police operation.

The police control room received a call at 20:40 reporting a possible burglary in progress at a detached house. Upon arrival, officers were informed by the homeowner that three individuals had forcibly entered the property. However, upon noticing the police presence, they fled without completing the burglary.

During a search of the area, officers spotted one suspect climbing a tree. When discovered, he ran away along with two others, jumping over the property’s fence. As they fled on foot, police attempted to stop them multiple times, but the suspects entered the open and heavily wooded area of the Viesques University Campus.

Given the terrain, police requested the assistance of the Local Police's Air Support Unit to conduct a search using a thermal imaging drone. All available patrols surrounded the area and located three men attempting to hide in the río Peñafrancia. When they realised they had been found, two of the suspects attempted to flee again but were apprehended.

Two local police officers sustained injuries due to the physical resistance of the alleged criminals. The third suspect managed to escape and has not yet been located.

The two arrested men, aged 29 and 30, were found in possession of radio transmitters with headsets, screwdrivers, flashlights, gloves, balaclavas, and various items of jewellery and cash, which are believed to have been stolen in a previous burglary. The vehicle allegedly used during the burglaries was found nearby the last affected property and has been removed for judicial proceedings.
