The Xunta de Galicia has announced an increase in funding for the Asociación de Amigos de la Ópera in A Coruña, with an additional €100,000 allocated for 2027. This will raise the total support to €250,000, reinforcing the regional government's commitment to cultural promotion.
Belén do Campo, the territorial delegate of the Xunta in A Coruña, made the announcement during a performance of Puccini's Tosca at the Palacio de la Ópera. She highlighted the importance of supporting initiatives that enhance the cultural landscape of A Coruña and Galicia as a whole.
The additional funding will enable the association to continue developing high-quality opera programming and to promote access to significant musical productions for the public. The Xunta's support aims to sustain the operatic tradition and engage new audiences in the performing arts.
Do Campo emphasised the role of cultural entities in enriching the community and fostering a diverse artistic scene in Galicia. The performance of Tosca, which will also take place on 24 October, is part of the current lyrical season and features a talented cast, including soprano Miren Urbieta-Vega in her debut as Tosca, baritone Carlos Álvarez as Scarpia, and Raaga Eldin as Cavaradossi.
The production is conducted by Oliver Díaz, leading the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia, with stage direction by Paul-Émile Fourny. The performance also includes the Coro Gaos, directed by Fernando Briones, and the children's choir Cantabile, under Pablo Carballido's direction. The cast is rounded out by Valeriano Lanchas as the Sacristan, along with Javier Agudo, Enrique Martínez, Pedro Martínez Tapia, Daniela Quiza, and Antonio Facal.
Tosca, composed by Giacomo Puccini with a libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, is based on Victorien Sardou's drama. It is renowned for its dramatic intensity and musical power, exploring themes of power, vulnerability, and abuse of authority that shape the characters' destinies.
With the planned increase in support for 2027, the Xunta reaffirms its commitment to collaborating with Galicia's cultural sector and maintaining an artistic offering that contributes to the cultural dynamism of A Coruña as a musical reference point.
