The city of Vigo has paid tribute to renowned oceanographer Aida Fernández Ríos with a commemorative plaque unveiled during a ceremony held at the Alameda de Bouzas. This event was organised in collaboration with the Royal Galician Academy of Sciences (RAGC) and the Marine Research Institute.
During the ceremony, a plaque was revealed on a bench installed in the Alameda, aimed at recognising the significant contributions of Fernández Ríos to marine science. The mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero, praised her career, highlighting her "immense capacity for work and profound modesty."
Caballero emphasised that Fernández Ríos's legacy in advocating for the ocean and marine biodiversity exemplifies the defence of life on the planet. "Vigo is very proud," he stated during the unveiling of the commemorative bench, which symbolises the connection between Aida, the ocean, and the city of Vigo.
Additionally, the city plans to name a street after Fernández Ríos, who was the first woman to serve as director of the Marine Research Institute and was recognised as the Galician Scientist of the Year in 2026 by the Royal Academy of Sciences.
