Mérida records historic visitor numbers in October

Mérida has achieved a record number of visitors in October 2026, with a total of 26,838 people visiting its municipal tourism offices. This figure represents a 22.36% increase from the previous year and a 33.06% rise compared to October 2019, the last year before the pandemic.

The statistics, which include visitors to the Roman Theatre, Puerta de la Villa, the Open Museum of Mérida (MAM), and Luxuria, confirm the city’s positive trajectory as a tourist destination. The figures show a significant recovery and growth in tourism, with 4,904 more visitors than in October 2025, which had already surpassed pre-pandemic levels.

Felipe González, the tourism delegate, expressed his satisfaction with the results, stating, "These figures are excellent news for Mérida and confirm that we are moving in the right direction. Achieving 26,838 visitors in October, exceeding even the 2019 records, demonstrates that our city can attract tourism beyond traditional holiday periods."

The data reveals that national tourism contributed significantly, with 18,623 visitors, an increase of 17.84% from the previous year. The leading regions of origin were Andalucía (23.19%), Madrid (19.19%), and the Comunidad Valenciana (11.15%). Meanwhile, international tourism also saw notable growth, with 8,215 foreign visitors, up 34.01% from October 2025. The most represented countries were Portugal (21.96%), the United States (11.16%), and Mexico (7.80%).

González highlighted the importance of this international growth, noting, "The increase of over 34% compared to last year shows that Mérida is gaining presence and appeal beyond our borders. We must continue to work on opening new markets and consolidating existing ones."

The city’s vibrant cultural programme has played a crucial role in attracting visitors throughout the year. In October, Mérida hosted a variety of events, including the III CineBeat Festival, the Feria Chica, the Autumn Artisan Market, performances by the Extremadura Orchestra, and the II Emérita Fashion Show, among others. These events took place across various cultural venues, including the Teatro María Luisa and the National Museum of Roman Art.

The holiday of All Saints' Day also contributed to the increase in visitor numbers at the end of the month. Hotel occupancy averaged 71.98%, with some establishments reporting full occupancy, such as the Hotel Akla. The caravan area at the fairgrounds recorded a 79% occupancy rate.

González concluded by stating that the goal is to maintain this upward trend by collaborating with the tourism sector and ensuring a year-round programme of activities. "We want visitors to always find a reason to come, discover our heritage, enjoy our culture, and stay in our city. Diversifying tourism is essential for generating continuous economic growth and job opportunities," he added.

The October figures reinforce Mérida's status as a growing tourist destination, showcasing its potential to attract both national and international visitors through its rich historical heritage and cultural offerings.
