The president of the Galician People's Party (PPdeG), Alfonso Rueda, has called for a renewed commitment from party members to act decisively in support of Alberto Núñez Feijóo ahead of the general elections scheduled for 29 November. Speaking at a large pre-campaign event at the Maritime Station in Vigo, Rueda emphasised the need for the PPdeG to be 'a great engine of change' with 'courage, strength, and conviction'.
Rueda welcomed Feijóo, the national PP president, stating, 'In the PPdeG, we always have the machinery activated. We must give our all: for Galicia, because we are proudly Galician, but also for Spain, because we are proudly Spanish. We do not renounce either one.' The event was attended by approximately 2,000 supporters from across Galicia, including local PP president Luisa Sánchez, PPdeG general secretary Paula Prado, and Luis López, president of the PP in the province of Pontevedra.
Rueda described Feijóo as being 'in his best moment', crucial for the change that Galicia urgently needs. He asserted that Galicians require a central government that does not discriminate, stating, 'We do not want more than anyone else, but we will not accept less.' He lamented the current government's focus on personal interests rather than the concerns of citizens, calling for an end to this situation.
He also expressed gratitude for the candidates stepping forward and those seeking re-election, highlighting the importance of strong representation. Rueda praised the familiarity Galicians have with Feijóo, saying they recognise him as a 'good person who listens and resolves issues', positioning him as the leader Spain needs.
In contrast, he condemned the 'lack of principles, manipulations, and denial of reality' surrounding the current Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez. Rueda also addressed recent violent incidents in La Coruña, which left police injured, stating, 'Galicia will not tolerate violence. Galicia is not that; let others be clear on this.' He criticised those who defend Sánchez unconditionally, including Abel Caballero, the mayor of Vigo, and the BNG party, which he accused of failing to achieve anything for Galicia.
Luisa Sánchez, the local PP president, echoed Rueda's sentiments, urging party members to ensure that the PP emerges as the leading political force in the upcoming elections. She remarked on the PSOE's perceived decline in Vigo, citing the movement of key figures within the party as evidence of their anticipated loss.
Sánchez also highlighted the challenges faced by Vigo under Sánchez's government, including delays in high-speed rail connections and other infrastructure issues, asserting, 'We cannot forget this. Pedro Sánchez and Abel Caballero are the same. Their ballot is the same. Just as we will end socialism at the central government level, we must also end it locally.'
Throughout the event, Rueda and Sánchez reinforced their commitment to a future under the principles of the PP, promising to fight for the interests of Galicia and its citizens.
