The Palmanova Hall in Calvià hosted the 23rd edition of the Calvià Chess Festival, attracting 140 chess players from 24 countries. This event has become a significant fixture in the municipality's calendar since its inception in 2004, showcasing the tournament's ability to draw international competitors year after year.

Using the Swiss system over nine rounds, which ensures all participants compete against similarly ranked opponents without direct elimination, the tournament proved to be a resounding success for the local players. Pablo Luis Aguado Doncel, a member of the Mallorca Isolani club, claimed the championship title after an impressive performance. The podium was entirely dominated by players from Mallorca, underscoring the high technical level of chess on the island.

Daniel Martín Rueda from the Sa Dragonera club secured second place, while Salvador Castell from Megaescacs took home the bronze medal. The tournament also saw a notable female presence, with Slovak player Andrea Bochnikova recognised as the best female competitor.

Additionally, the competition acknowledged the achievements of senior players, with Juan Ramón Galiana Salom winning the Senior +60 category and English player Paul Hutchinson taking the title in the Senior +70 category. Complete tournament standings can be accessed on the official Chess-Results website.

The Calvià Chess Festival exemplifies the municipality's commitment to promoting high-level international sporting events. Coinciding with the Challenge Peguera Mallorca, the chess tournament contributes to enhancing Calvià's international profile, promoting quality tourism and economic dynamism essential for the area's off-season development.
