The Ayuntamiento de Marratxí has organised a series of activities to commemorate World Breast Cancer Day, observed on 19 October. The programme features a documentary screening, two concerts, and a health walk, all aimed at raising awareness about breast cancer, the importance of early detection, and supporting those affected by the disease.
Today, the façade of the town hall will be illuminated in pink, and a pink ribbon will be displayed as a symbol of solidarity with individuals impacted by breast cancer. The activities will take place from 23 to 30 October.
The mayor of Marratxí, Jaume Llompart, emphasised the significance of this commemoration: “Breast cancer is a reality that affects many people and families in our community. This day reminds us of the importance of openly discussing the disease, supporting those who suffer from it and their families, and highlighting their experiences.”
Programme of events
The first activity will occur on Friday, 23 October, at 19:00 in Sa Refinadora, featuring the screening of the documentary 'Sacar pecho'. The film follows eight women diagnosed with breast cancer as they embark on a walking journey through the Serra de Tramuntana. Their testimonies transform the journey into a metaphor for their emotional process, addressing themes of fear, pain, and resilience, alongside insights from healthcare professionals.
This event will require a donation of €10. On Saturday, 24 October, at 20:00, Sa Refinadora will host the concert 'Un piano y 500 velas', performed by pianist David Gómez. This intimate musical experience, highlighted by candlelight, will also have a donation of €10.
Carmen Cañellas, the councillor for culture, noted that “culture can also help to understand and share experiences related to the disease. The documentary allows us to connect with the experiences of eight women through their own testimonies, while the concert provides a space for gathering around music.”
The programme will continue on Wednesday, 28 October, at 19:00, with a therapeutic gospel concert by the health department's workshop, held at the church of Pla de na Tesa. On Friday, 30 October, at 09:30, a health walk will commence from the Martí Serra Health Centre and conclude at the plaza of Secretari Bartomeu Riera, demonstrating support for those living with the disease.
Elvira García, the councillor for health, reiterated the importance of information and early diagnosis: “Early detection is crucial in addressing breast cancer. It is essential to be aware of screening programmes, attend recommended check-ups, and consult healthcare professionals about any changes or symptoms that may cause concern.”
In conjunction with World Breast Cancer Day, the Ayuntamiento will illuminate the town hall in pink and display a pink ribbon today, 19 October. This symbolic action aims to raise awareness of the disease and express support for those diagnosed and their families. World Breast Cancer Day, celebrated annually on 19 October, seeks to increase awareness about the disease, the importance of early detection, and the support for affected individuals and their surroundings.
