The mayor of Mérida has urged the Junta de Extremadura to pay a historical debt of €42 million and has proposed new strategic investments during a meeting of the Capital City Council.
Among the key issues discussed, the mayor highlighted the need for the regional government to take responsibility for the expansion of the El Prado Industrial Estate, which covers an area of 75 hectares. This expansion is part of the new General Urban Planning Plan (PGOU) and aims to strengthen the business fabric of Mérida, encourage the establishment of new economic activities, and create conditions for industrial growth and job creation.
The local government has also requested that the Junta commit to the necessary investments for this project, similar to past initiatives undertaken by the regional administration in other municipalities.
In addition, the mayor proposed that the City Council of Mérida join the project for the National Museum of Visigothic Art, a long-standing request that has been made to the Ministry of Culture at the national level.
Furthermore, the mayor announced that Mérida will host a round of the prestigious MXGP Motocross World Championship on 17 and 18 April at the Royanejos Circuit, with support from both the city council and the regional government.
Through these proposals, the City Council of Mérida reaffirms its commitment to advancing institutional collaboration with the Junta de Extremadura while seeking concrete commitments in financing, industrial development, and cultural promotion to address the current and future needs of the capital of Extremadura.
