Camino de Santiago as a cultural melting pot and a key to Galicia's heritage

The representative of the Xunta anticipates a 'multiplier effect' of cultural exchange and the promotion of Galicia's heritage with the upcoming Holy Year.

Camino de Santiago as a cultural melting pot and a key to Galicia's heritage

The Conseller of Culture, Language and Youth, José López Campos, has hailed the Camino de Santiago as a 'melting pot of the world's cultures' and a significant driver of Galicia's unique heritage and identity. His remarks came during the opening of the Congress of Xacobean Associations in Mérida, where he was joined by the commissioner for Xacobeo 2027, Marcos Gómez Román.

López Campos highlighted that the forthcoming Holy Year is expected to create a 'multiplier effect' in the cultural exchanges occurring along the various pilgrimage routes. He emphasised that this event will further enhance the global dissemination of Galicia's cultural values and heritage.

He praised the numerous Xacobean associations that not only enrich the unique experience of the Camino but also guide visitors and pilgrims, ensuring that these routes are both admired and well-maintained.

According to López Campos, 'The history of Galicia cannot be understood without the influence that has come from all over the world through the Camino de Santiago.' He acknowledged the undeniable contribution of involved entities to the success of the Xacobeo phenomenon, which is measurable not only in numbers but also in the affection, respect, and protection afforded to the pilgrimage routes.

'Thanks to your work, the pilgrimage itineraries have acquired a more universal, open, and dialogical character,' he added. He also reiterated the regional government's strong commitment to safeguarding the valuable heritage associated with the various Xacobean routes, outlining measures and funding aimed at their complete protection. One of the primary focuses, as he explained, is the preservation of monuments, large temples, and churches linked to the Camino de Santiago.
