34th edition of underwater film week at UVigo to feature a dozen screenings

The 34th edition of the Underwater Film Week at the University of Vigo (UVigo) is set to take place from 3 to 5 November at the Afundación auditorium. This year’s event will feature a dozen screenings that will immerse audiences in the depths of the oceans, addressing issues such as plastic waste and shark meat trade.

The week will include the world premiere of 'O bosque de carrumeiro', produced by the university, which highlights the diversity of brown algae forests in Galician waters. Dolores González, the Vice-Rector for Students and University Life, emphasised the significance of the festival and its growth over the years.

The event will kick off with 'Dhanguethi. Recuerdos de Alif Daaal' by Jorge Martínez Vázquez and 'Tesoros del Caribe' by Ana Salceda, who will also participate in a subsequent discussion. On 4 November, the International Underwater Film Cycle from Donostia-San Sebastián will be presented, featuring screenings such as 'Norway, welcome to the darkness' and 'Shark Preyed'. Ricardo Beiras, a professor of Ecology at UVigo, will be the guest on the second day.

The final day will showcase short films including 'A lamprea de mar no río Miño' and 'O regreso dos xigantes: rorcuais no Atlántico galego'. The week will culminate with the world premiere of 'O bosque de carrumeiro', which underscores the biodiversity of Galician waters.
