The construction of the new Gol stand at the Municipal Stadium of Balaídos in Vigo is advancing steadily. The latest phase involves the installation of the final section of the mesh that supports the roof, which is anticipated to be completed by the end of November, weather permitting.
Vigo's council is working towards opening Gol Baixo, which will have a capacity of more than 3,400 spectators, in time for the galician derby scheduled for 3 January. Abel Caballero, the mayor of Vigo, confirmed that all 16 sections of the mesh have now been installed, including six at the front facing the pitch and ten at the rear.
In addition to the roofing, work is ongoing inside the stand, where partitions for various spaces are being constructed, alongside masonry, carpentry, insulation, flooring, and sewage network installation. Caballero noted, “We are also progressing with the installation of the beautiful blue skin that envelops the stands of Balaídos. If the weather allows, the entire blue skin will be completed by the end of November.”
Mid-November is expected to mark the start of seat installation throughout the stand. Following a recent contract modification to increase capacity, the council anticipates that the entire project will be completed by the end of February or early March 2027.
The partial opening of Gol Baixo is planned before the full completion of the new stand. The updated configuration will allow Gol to accommodate 7,139 spectators, an increase from the initially planned 6,418, adding 721 additional seats. This adjustment has resulted in a slight delay of approximately one month from the original timeline.
Once the renovations are complete, Balaídos Stadium will surpass a total capacity of 31,000 spectators. By that time, three of the four stands—Río, Marcador, and Gol—will have been fully transformed. The redevelopment of Balaídos will continue with the renovation of the Tribuna stand, a necessary step to meet the requirements for hosting matches during the 2030 World Cup.
The council has already commenced this process with the relocation of sewage collectors in front of the current Tribuna façade, a preliminary action needed to clear space for the planned stand expansion.
