Xunta celebrates 20 years of motorhome tourism in Galicia

The director of Tourism of Galicia, Xosé Merelles, participated in the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Galician Association of Motorhomes (AGA) on Saturday. Founded in 2006, AGA is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting motorhome tourism as a way to explore Galicia.

During the event, Merelles emphasised the role of this tourism model in diversifying Galicia's offerings, facilitating visitor access to various destinations across the region, and generating economic activity in local hospitality establishments, markets, wineries, and businesses.

He noted that Galicia was a pioneer in regulating motorhome tourism, having introduced a specific category for motorhome facilities in a camping decree approved in 2019. Merelles also highlighted the collaboration with local councils to expand and enhance the network of welcome and service areas, particularly in rural municipalities, through agreements and a €3 million aid line aimed at towns with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants.

These initiatives not only improve services for travellers but also stimulate economic activity and contribute to population retention in the area. Merelles pointed out that motorhome tourism represents an opportunity to develop a more diversified tourism model across Galicia, allowing visitors to discover new places and support local economies.

He also acknowledged the importance of the Galician Association of Motorhomes as a key stakeholder in advancing infrastructure improvements, parking regulations, and promoting a tourism model that respects the territory.

Tourism statistics

Merelles referred to recent tourism data published by the National Institute of Statistics, which highlighted a growth in both visitors and overnight stays in the region's hotels and guesthouses during September. Specifically, the number of travellers increased by 5.7%, and overnight stays rose by 7% compared to the previous year.

So far this year, Galicia has recorded 5.7 million visitors, who have spent over 1.2 million nights, resulting in economic revenues for the sector amounting to €394.5 million, a 7.4% increase compared to the first nine months of 2025.
