The Quirino Awards have officially opened the call for entries for their tenth edition, allowing animation works from 23 Ibero-American countries that premiered between 1 June 2025 and 31 December 2026 to participate. Submissions will remain open until 25 November and must be made exclusively through the Festhome platform.
The awards ceremony is scheduled for 23 April 2027 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The competition features seven main categories: feature film, series, short film, student short film, music video, commissioned work, and video game animation. The first six categories will also compete for technical awards in visual development, animation design, and original sound and music.
A selection committee will choose six preselected works in each category, while an international jury will determine the three nominees and the final winners. Notably, the preselection for video game animation will include an independent specialised committee.
The preselected works will be announced on 2 February 2027, with nominations revealed in March. The organisation has stated that works whose script, images, animation, voices, sound, or music in the final version have been generated using generative artificial intelligence will not be accepted, although its use for auxiliary tasks such as reference research or translation is permitted.
Silvina Cornillón, the awards director, emphasised that reaching ten editions solidifies the event as a key date for Ibero-American animation on both sides of the Atlantic. In the 2026 edition, 265 works were submitted from 19 countries, with Spain, Brazil, and Argentina being the main participants. The feature film Decorado, directed by Alberto Vázquez and co-produced by Spain and Portugal, won the award for best film.
