València has inaugurated the 'més que unes torres' interpretation centre, designed to provide an immersive cultural experience that reveals the history and architecture of the Torres dels Serrans, a prominent historical monument in the city. The centre is part of a GovTech project, developed by València Innovation Capital in collaboration with the Directorate General of Disability, aimed at creating innovative solutions to improve access to cultural heritage for individuals with disabilities.
Located in Plaza de la Crida, directly opposite the Torres dels Serrans, the centre will be open to the public until 10 January 2027. During this period, visitors will have the opportunity to engage with this iconic monument from a new perspective, overcoming physical barriers that typically hinder access, without requiring any modifications to the protected historical building, classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Cultural Heritage Asset).
“With projects like 'més que unes torres', we demonstrate how innovation can address real needs within the community,” said Paula Llobet, the city’s councillor for innovation. “GovTech challenges connect the administration with innovative talent to develop solutions that enhance public services and create new opportunities for cultural enjoyment in a more accessible and inclusive manner.”
Technology and innovation enhancing heritage
The centre offers a journey through the history of the Torres dels Serrans using various resources tailored to diverse audiences. A standout feature is a virtual reality experience that recreates the interior of the monument, allowing visitors to travel back in time to explore its spaces and history. Additional resources include a tactile scale model at 1:50, subtitled audiovisual content, accessible audio guides via QR codes, and easy-to-read explanatory panels. This combination of tools provides multiple ways to engage with cultural heritage, accommodating different access and comprehension needs.
The winning project, developed by Estudio Artis, successfully meets the challenge of creating an adapted cultural interpretation centre without physically altering the Torres dels Serrans. Thus, the space serves as a demonstration of how technology and accessible design can expand opportunities for cultural participation.
GovTech challenges as a pathway for innovation
'més que unes torres' is part of València Innovation Capital's GovTech strategy, which promotes collaboration between public administration and the innovative ecosystem to address specific challenges within the city. Through this model, public services identify needs and propose challenges that allow for the exploration of new responses through business innovation. In this instance, the goal has been to enhance cultural and tourist accessibility, bringing a historical monument closer to individuals who face barriers to conventional visits.
In addition to providing a new experience for the public, the centre will also evaluate the effectiveness of the developed solutions and their potential to inspire similar initiatives in other heritage sites and public administrations.
Visiting information
The interpretation centre is open from today, 23 October 2026, until 10 January 2027, at Plaza de la Crida, opposite the Torres dels Serrans. From 23 to 31 October, it will operate Monday to Saturday from 11:00 to 17:00. From 1 November until 10 January, the centre will continue to open Monday to Saturday, but from 11:00 to 16:20. On Sundays and public holidays, it will be open from 10:30 to 12:30 throughout the period. Each session accommodates approximately 10 people, so groups of 5 to 10 must reserve their visit in advance. With 'més que unes torres', València Innovation Capital is pioneering a new approach to bringing heritage closer to the public and demonstrating how GovTech challenges can transform real needs into innovative solutions with social impact.
