The rebellion of the pariahs: theatre to reclaim the voices of women silenced by history

LaGodot esCénica is set to stage three performances of ‘The rebellion of the pariahs’ in La Gomera, Tenerife, and Fuerteventura on 22, 24, and 30 October. This production aims to bring to light the voices of women who have been silenced throughout history, intertwining historical memory, literature, and contemporary theatrical creation.

The first performance will take place on 22 October at 20:00 in the Auditorium of La Gomera. Two days later, on 24 October at the same time, the play will be presented at Espacio La Granja in Tenerife, concluding its run on 30 October at 20:30 in the Auditorium of Antigua in Fuerteventura. The initial and final performances are organised in collaboration with the Heritage Unit of the ICDC, while the Tenerife show is part of the theatrical programming at La Granja, which is managed by the same public entity.

The narrative of ‘The rebellion of the pariahs’ centres on the struggle for women's freedom, a recurring theme throughout human history. The play features verses from Spain's Golden Age written by historically silenced figures such as Ana Abarca de Bolea, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Leonor de la Cueva y Silva, Ana Caro, and María de Zayas. These dialogues are juxtaposed with prose from women silenced during the Spanish Civil War.

Running for approximately one hour and recommended for audiences aged 14 and over, the production combines dramatic theatre, performative language, live music, and scenic experimentation. Historical memory is transformed into theatrical material, aiming to recover narratives that have long been excluded from the dominant discourse and prompting the audience to reflect on their relevance today.

Guaxara Baldassarre is responsible for the authorship, direction, and performance, sharing the stage with violinist Óscar Guerra. The musical composition and direction are by Lourdes Suárez, while Ibán Negrín is in charge of lighting design and Carlos Santos oversees the scenic space and set design. Costume design is attributed to Yaiza Pinillos and Carmen Alzate.

The production has been recognised at the 2025 Réplica Awards, winning Best Lighting and receiving nominations for Best Sound Space, Best Set Design, Best Performance, Best Authorship, and Best Theatre Show.

With ‘The rebellion of the pariahs’, LaGodot esCénica continues its commitment to social and political theatre, using the stage as a platform to reclaim voices, revisit memory, and raise new questions about the present.
