Luisa Sánchez, the president of the Popular Party in Vigo, has emphasised the Xunta de Galicia's commitment to the recovery of the ETEA (Estación de Tratamiento de Aguas Residuales), which is being realised through the allocation of 11.72 million euros in the 2027 regional budget. This funding aims to continue the urbanisation of various areas and to construct a new Marine Research Centre in the Siemens building.
“We see that the Galician Government reaffirms its commitment to Vigo by investing in the ETEA, as well as in housing, education, healthcare, infrastructure, and social policies,” Sánchez stated during a press conference at the Plaza de Armas of the ETEA.
She highlighted the historical amount allocated to Vigo by the regional government in next year’s budget, particularly the significant investment in the recovery of the ETEA. This includes 5.6 million euros for the completion of urbanisation in the PS-6 area (2.55 million euros), where a senior citizens' residence, supported by the Amancio Ortega Foundation, will be built, and 3.1 million euros for the urbanisation of the PS-1 area, which encompasses roadways and the Plaza de Armas.
Additionally, 6.12 million euros are earmarked for the new Marine Research Centre, which is part of the University Infrastructure Plan of the Consellería de Educación (Department of Education). “This is a boost for the reorganisation of this area and a new source of pride for the residents of Teis, as this project has been long awaited since the government ceded the land nearly 18 years ago to open it to the public and establish the Campus del Mar,” Sánchez recalled.
“There is a budget, there is will, and a signed agreement since last February to begin work,” she added, referencing a previous public appearance involving local officials, including Abel Caballero, David Regades, and the former rector of the University of Vigo, where the Consellería de Infraestructuras was not invited.
Sánchez lamented that the development of PS-1, for which the Xunta committed 10 million euros, remains blocked by Caballero, accusing him of prioritising his electoral interests over the city’s needs.
Commitment to housing construction
The local PP president celebrated that the Xunta's budget confirms its intention to lead in housing construction, with a total of 96 million euros allocated for Vigo, marking the largest investment in housing in a Galician city for the coming year. Of this amount, 76.28 million euros are designated for the continued construction of public housing, representing a 23.7% increase compared to this year, while 7.4 million euros will be used for the development of residential land for protected housing.
In addition to housing initiatives, the Xunta's commitment to major projects in Vigo is reflected in a budget of 1.5 million euros for the renovation of the Fraga Theatre, 300,000 euros for co-financing the Elduayen tunnel, 300,000 euros for new athletics tracks at Balaídos, and 14.35 million euros for the ongoing construction of the IES Domingo Villar in Navia, which is the first educational centre in Galicia built entirely under a new pedagogical architecture plan. The investment in education is also evident with 1.5 million euros allocated for the rehabilitation of the Vicente Risco school, while healthcare improvements will include renovations to the emergency department of Álvaro Cunqueiro Hospital (1.6 million euros), enhancements at Meixoeiro Hospital (2.4 million euros), and upgrades to the Maxillofacial Unit (1.01 million euros) and the Assisted Reproduction Unit (1.01 million euros), among others.
