José Manuel Rey Varela, the president of the Popular Party in Ferrol, has announced that the Galician government will allocate over 161.7 million euros to Ferrolterra for public housing construction and urban transformation projects as part of its 2027 budget. This represents an 18% increase compared to previous investments.
The overall budget for the Xunta de Galicia exceeds 15.1 billion euros, reflecting a 6.4% increase from 2026. This marks the eighteenth consecutive year that the budget has been approved on time. The budget also includes new tax reductions for families and businesses, as well as measures to improve access to housing.
Rey Varela emphasised that the Xunta's commitment to Ferrol is evident through these substantial investments, which aim to stimulate economic and social development in the area. He contrasted this proactive approach with the central government, which has been operating on a prorogued budget for several years.
Focus on public housing and urban regeneration
The Galician government is intensifying its efforts to construct public housing in Ferrol, particularly in light of the lack of investment from the central government in this area. Rey Varela stated, “While the central government does not allocate funds for public housing in Ferrol, the Galician government is advancing the construction of 353 new homes and increasing resources to facilitate access to housing and urban recovery.”
Specifically, 37.7 million euros will be directed towards public housing construction in Bertón, with an additional one million euros allocated to housing in the city. Currently, 172 homes are under construction in Bertón, while 181 others are in the bidding phase. The nearby municipality of Narón will also see an increase in public housing, with 7.7 million euros earmarked for the construction of 105 public homes.
Significant urban transformation ahead
Thanks to the Xunta's investment, Ferrol is poised for its most significant urban transformation in decades. Key projects such as 'Opening Ferrol to the Sea' and the 'City of Sport' will receive a boost of 10.5 million euros. The budget for the 'Opening Ferrol to the Sea' initiative will increase by 120%, rising from 1.6 million euros in 2026 to 3.52 million euros in 2027.
In the realm of sports, the Xunta continues to support the 'City of Sport' project with an investment of 3.2 million euros, ensuring that local athletes have access to top-notch facilities.
Investment in infrastructure and economic development
Ferrol will also benefit from a new business park in Mandiá, designed to meet the demand for industrial land and promote new economic activities. Rey Varela noted that this new area will add 1.6 million square metres of industrial space, enhancing the city's industrial and logistical potential.
Additionally, the budget includes 2.6 million euros for improving energy efficiency in the Cabana Industrial Centre and 230,000 euros for the Occupational Training Centre in Caranza.
Enhancements in healthcare and social services
The healthcare sector remains a priority, with 17.14 million euros allocated to the Complex Hospitalario de Ferrol for ongoing construction projects and equipment upgrades. This includes funding for the humanisation of hospital spaces and the acquisition of new vehicles for healthcare services.
Furthermore, the budget reinforces support for the elderly and families, with significant investments in home care services and child care initiatives. The Xunta will maintain free access to early childhood education for approximately 32,000 children across the region, including nearly 900 in Ferrol.
Overall, the 2027 budget reflects a comprehensive strategy aimed at fostering growth, enhancing public services, and improving the quality of life for residents in Ferrol and its surrounding areas.
