The mayor of Porriño, Alejandro Lorenzo, has announced plans for several new cultural and recreational facilities set to open in the coming months. During an informative lunch event in October, he revealed a timeline for inaugurations coinciding with the festive season.
Among the most anticipated projects is the opening of the municipal cinema in December, which will feature free screenings on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays throughout the month. The cinema, which has been transformed from the former cultural centre, will cater to audiences of all ages, particularly children. The renovation has a budget exceeding €250,000, with approximately €100,000 funded by the AGADIC, the Galician Agency for Cultural Industries. The cinema will boast state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment, including a 4K Ultra HD projection system and a professional screen measuring 5 by 3 metres.
New auditorium to enhance cultural offerings
In addition to the cinema, the municipal auditorium is also set to open in December. This venue will accommodate over 350 seats and is designed to host a variety of cultural events throughout the year. The construction of the auditorium represents an investment of nearly €2.8 million.
Revitalisation of Plaza de Pío XII
In terms of urban development, the expansion of Plaza de Pío XII is expected to be completed in January. This project aims to enhance the town centre by improving connectivity between several streets and creating a new green space. The initiative will transform over 4,000 square metres into a community area featuring a covered park and an outdoor auditorium. The total investment for this project exceeds €2.1 million, with more than €1.1 million provided by the Pontevedra Provincial Council.
Upcoming cultural spaces and employment initiatives
Further developments include the opening of the Sala Palacios on 8 January, which will celebrate the legacy of the renowned architect Antonio Palacios. This exhibition space will showcase a permanent collection of previously unseen materials related to his work.
Mayor Lorenzo also announced plans to expand the Municipal Employment Centre in Torneiros to create new business incubators and a space for entrepreneurs. The project will be submitted for European funding later this month. Additionally, the local government is considering a reduction in property taxes for protected housing to encourage developers and cooperatives.
As part of the municipal budget, there are allocations for repairing sports facilities in various parishes and ongoing urban regeneration projects in Torneiros.
