Local government allocates €1.4 million for improvements to Velòdrom Lluís Puig ahead of 2027 European Athletics Championships

The Palau Velòdrom Lluís Puig, which features a velodrome, an indoor athletics track, training areas, and other sports facilities, has a seating capacity of approximately 6,000 spectators. The Local Government Board has recently awarded two contracts aimed at upgrading the venue in preparation for the upcoming European Athletics Championships scheduled for 2027.

The contracts include a project for repairing leaks in the pavilion and the construction of a prefabricated modular building adjacent to the velodrome, designated for warm-up activities. The leak repair contract has been awarded to Torrescámara y cía. de Obras SA for €745,524.45, including VAT, with a completion timeframe of four months from the signing of the project verification act. Meanwhile, the warm-up building construction has been awarded to a temporary union of companies (UTE) formed by Anrotech Car Park SL and Industrias Metálicas Anro SLU, with a budget of €699,999.98, also inclusive of VAT.

New warm-up facility for athletes

The planned modular building for the warm-up area will be a rectangular prefabricated structure with an industrial and functional design, aimed at maximising interior volume and ventilation. According to the project, designed by architect José María González Ibáñez, the ground floor will provide approximately 700 square metres of unobstructed training space. The building will connect to the velodrome and will be divided into two distinct zones: a track area and a service area for teams.

The track area will feature five or more lanes with technical characteristics similar to those of the velodrome, ensuring a seamless transition from the warm-up zone to the competition track. The lanes will extend 40 metres, with the track length not falling below 47 metres. The service area for teams will consist of an open space that can be partitioned with fixed or mobile screens, designated as a physiotherapy box. The construction works will involve modifications to the IDE Benimamet B, which is part of the municipal plot located at Vicenta Rodrigo Arce Street.

Comprehensive leak repairs

The leak repair project aims to enhance the watertightness of the facility and ensure the preservation of the sports installation. The works will focus on areas that show damage or are in poor condition, including the conversion of the roof with insulation and waterproofing, as well as the replacement of translucent polycarbonate elements in the roof and façade. Additional measures will include waterproofing flat roofs, renewing finishes, and implementing supplementary actions to bolster protection against moisture.

For the corrugated sheet roof, seals, overlaps, and specific points will be inspected, with deteriorated screws being replaced and a partial Deck roof solution implemented. The translucent roof and façade will be entirely renewed through the replacement of polycarbonate elements, and improvements will also be made to the perimeter flat roofs. In blocks 4, 5, and 6, loose terrazzo flooring and existing insulation will be removed, while block 3 will be conditioned. Subsequently, a new waterproofing membrane will be installed at designated points to enhance moisture protection.
