Fundació Coll Bardolet presents exhibition exploring Mallorca's transformation into a travel destination

The Consell de Mallorca has announced its support for the cultural programming of the Fundació Cultural Coll Bardolet in Valldemossa, providing a nominative grant of €60,000 for the year 2026. This funding aims to enhance the promotion of visual and plastic arts in Mallorca and to develop the foundation's cultural programming throughout the year.

The Fundació is currently hosting the exhibition titled «Viatgers a l’illa. Un paradís de paper», which invites visitors to explore how Mallorca evolved from a little-known island to a captivating destination for European travellers. The exhibition features original materials from the Pons Company Collection, including engravings, letters, travel books, maps, and posters, tracing the construction of the island's image between the 19th and 20th centuries.

Antònia Roca, the Vice President of the Consell de Mallorca and Councillor for Culture and Heritage, visited the Fundació to view the exhibition and meet with its representatives. Roca remarked, “Exhibitions like this allow us to connect with Mallorca's history through the images and documents that have helped to disseminate our heritage, landscape, and identity.”

The exhibition highlights the significant role that travel books and illustrated publications played in promoting Mallorca beyond its borders. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, magazines, guides, brochures, and postcards contributed to transforming perceptions of the island, solidifying its image as an attractive location for travellers, writers, and artists.

The grant awarded by the Consell de Mallorca will support the project Art, culture and heritage, which includes temporary exhibitions related to Valldemossa and Mallorca, showcases linked to tourism and travel to the island, exhibitions featuring artists associated with Coll Bardolet, as well as micro-exhibitions and complementary activities.
