The Teatro Real's mobile stage will present a lyrical recital of opera and zarzuela on Friday, 23 October, at 21:00, at the Casino de la Exposición. The event, organised by the Seville City Council's Tourism and Culture Department, is part of the celebrations for Opera Day and will be open to the public until full capacity is reached.
This initiative aims to bring lyrical repertoire closer to the residents of Seville, fostering new audiences and promoting two essential genres of Spain's musical heritage. La Carroza del Real is a cultural outreach project by Teatro Real, which forms part of its 'Cerca de ti' initiative, designed to take musical performances and activities to various locations across Spain.
The mobile stage transforms into a live performance space, allowing the experience of opera and zarzuela to reach public squares, streets, and other community gathering places. Angie Moreno, the delegate for Tourism and Culture, emphasised that the arrival of La Carroza del Teatro Real in Seville coincides with the commitment to make culture accessible to all and to facilitate access to artistic expressions that are part of the country's musical heritage. "We want opera and zarzuela to reach those who have yet to discover them," she stated.
Moreno also highlighted the city's ongoing efforts to ensure Seville remains a vibrant cultural hub, open to various disciplines and capable of generating new spaces for interaction between artists and the public. Hosting an initiative from Teatro Real at the Casino de la Exposición allows for an expanded lyrical programme and offers a free musical experience in an emblematic city venue.
The upcoming performance will feature singers accompanied by a pianist, presenting a selection of arias, duets, and other pieces from the operatic and zarzuela repertoire. This format enables the presentation of works from different eras and styles in a concert lasting approximately one hour, making it accessible for both regular opera attendees and those experiencing the genre for the first time.
La Carroza del Real draws inspiration from La Barraca, the theatrical project initiated by Federico García Lorca that brought classic Spanish theatre to numerous towns. La Carroza del Real began in 2022 and has since travelled to over thirty provinces in Spain, featuring opera and zarzuela recitals, instrumental concerts, and performances aimed at children.
The presence of La Carroza del Real at the Casino de la Exposición offers a unique opportunity to enjoy lyrical music in a different format from traditional stage performances, while maintaining live interpretation as the central element of the activity. Opera Day also serves as an opportunity to highlight the relevance of this genre and its ability to connect with audiences across generations, particularly in a city like Seville, which celebrated its inaugural Opera Festival in 2025 on a biennial basis.
