The Fires de Sant Narcís festival in Girona has concluded with the lowest number of recorded incidents in the past five years, according to the city's municipal police. This year saw a significant reduction in calls to the emergency number 092 and a notable decline in traffic accidents resulting in injuries.
Data shows that incidents reported by the police dropped by almost 12%, with a total of 1,891 incidents recorded compared to 2,143 last year. This marks the lowest figure in five years. Calls to the emergency services also decreased from 1,451 in 2025 to 1,317 in 2026, representing a reduction of over 9%.
Improvements in public safety
The festival's success in maintaining public safety has been attributed to a strong police presence and proactive measures. Sílvia Aliu Gifre, the deputy mayor and councillor for Convivencia and Security, highlighted the importance of an intensive police presence in crowded areas, facilitated by the third year of the Convivencia and Security Point initiative.
“The figures confirm the positive feedback we have received from the public: we have had a festival with fewer overall incidents, less demand for police intervention, and a significant reduction in accidents with injuries,” said Aliu Gifre.
Traffic and mobility management
In terms of traffic management, the municipal police noted a decrease in vehicle circulation around the Devesa area, partly due to reduced parking spaces near festival locations. Despite this, there was increased vigilance to prevent illegal parking, particularly in Fontajau and Domeny. A total of 1,285 traffic violations were reported, nearly 14% more than last year.
Traffic accidents with injuries fell dramatically, from 22 last year to just 10 this year, a decrease of over 50%. During the festival, 280 breathalyser tests were conducted, with 34 returning positive results, approximately 12% of the total tested.
Reduction in thefts
According to data from the Mossos d'Esquadra, the regional police force, thefts and robberies also saw a decline during the festival. A total of 179 incidents were reported, down 13% from 205 last year. This included 102 petty thefts, which is a 25% decrease compared to 2025.
Overall, the festival's security measures were deemed effective, with no major incidents reported that could disrupt the event. The police's focus on prevention and community safety contributed to a successful celebration of the Fires de Sant Narcís.
