The Junta de Cofradías de Semana Santa de Villanueva de la Serena has officially launched a competition for the design of the poster for Semana Santa 2027. This year's poster will prominently feature the image of Nuestra Señora de la Aurora.
The competition will run from 19 September, coinciding with the Day of the Virgin of Sorrows, until 28 March, which is Easter Sunday. As is customary, each year the poster is based on one of the titular images from the various brotherhoods and cofradías (religious brotherhoods) involved in the celebrations.
This year's theme requires participants to reflect on the image of Nuestra Señora de la Aurora within the context of Villanueva de la Serena's Semana Santa, highlighting its artistic and cultural values, as well as the urban and historical settings in which the events take place.
Entries for the competition are open to anyone over the age of 18, and participants may use a variety of artistic techniques including oil, acrylics, watercolours, pastels, charcoal, sanguine, or mixed techniques incorporating any of the aforementioned methods. Photographic submissions are also welcome.
The poster must be in a vertical format, measuring 50 cm by 70 cm, and should be presented on a rigid support or frame. It must include the text “Semana Santa. Villanueva de la Serena 2027” in a format, type, size, and design chosen by the artist, ensuring it is legible for printing.
Additionally, the Junta de Cofradías stipulates that all submitted works must be original and unpublished, prohibiting any copies of existing posters or works created using artificial intelligence. The artist will bear sole responsibility for the authorship of their submission.
A single cash prize of €600 and a commemorative plaque will be awarded to the winning entry, which will become the official poster for Semana Santa 2027 and will also feature on the cover of the annual magazine published by the Junta de Cofradías.
