Renovation works on Figueres' municipal swimming pools have begun, aiming to enhance both the indoor and outdoor facilities. The project includes the replacement of all 21 windows surrounding the pools, painting of interior and exterior walls, and the installation of new water treatment filters.
The renovations, which will take place from 26 October to the end of November, will require the pools to be emptied and closed to the public for two weeks, from 26 October to 8 November. This temporary closure replaces the usual maintenance shutdown during the Christmas period, which will not be necessary this year. The water removed from the pools will be reused by FISERSA for cleaning purposes.
The Figueres City Council, with the support of the Generalitat of Catalonia, is overseeing the renovation, which has a total budget of €720,279. The Generalitat is contributing €454,717 (63%) as part of its emergency plan to improve sports facilities, while the Figueres City Council is providing €255,562 (37%). Additionally, a €10,000 grant from the Diputación de Girona will support the replacement of closures and water filters.
This marks the first time since the complex was built in 1984 that all window closures are being replaced. The existing windows have suffered from broken glass, humidity issues, and outdated materials that pose safety risks. The new windows will feature an aluminium structure with fixed glass and a lever mechanism for operation.
Further improvements will include the renovation of both interior and exterior walls, which currently show signs of peeling paint and cracked cement. Repairs will be made to the walls and rusted doors, along with upgrades to electrical systems including emergency lighting, sockets, public address systems, and Wi-Fi.
Another significant aspect of the renovation is the upgrade of the water treatment system, which has become outdated and requires constant manual monitoring. The new filters will enhance water quality and allow for easier regulation of key parameters such as free chlorine, pH, Redox potential, and temperature. These improvements will benefit both the indoor and outdoor pools.
Looking ahead to 2027, plans are in place to further enhance the climate control within the facility, including the replacement of the dehumidifier, which is designed to manage excess humidity in enclosed spaces.
