The seventh edition of the Monologue Marathon, organised by the Valencian Association of Writers and Dramaturges (AVEET), is set to take place on 22 October at the Gran Teatre d'Alzira. This event will feature six playwrights from different generations, showcasing their unique voices and perspectives.
Since its inception in 2020, the Monologue Marathon has aimed to decentralise cultural activities across the Valencian Community. Each year, the event is hosted in one of the three provinces, with this year's collaboration from the Alzira City Council. The marathon will present six original monologues, each lasting approximately ten minutes, written by AVEET members.
The selected playwrights include Dave Aidan, Victoria Enguídanos, Pedro Lozano, Isabel Martí, Ester Medrano, and David Sánchez Pacheco. Their works reflect a range of contemporary themes, from existentialism and family ties to social issues such as gender-based violence and mental health.
Diverse themes and voices
Each monologue addresses different societal concerns, providing audiences with a glimpse into the complexities of modern life. For instance, David Sánchez Pacheco's piece, 'La conformitat', explores the challenges faced by a woman dealing with telemarketing while waiting for a bus, highlighting the underlying issues of violence and solitude. Isabel Martí's 'La filiació' offers a self-parody of her role as AVEET president, discussing the precariousness of cultural professionals in today's hyper-connected society.
Other notable works include Ester Medrano's 'Laca laca laca', which sensitively reflects on the needs of caregivers, and Pedro Lozano's 'Li direm la possibilitat d’una illa', a philosophical exploration of authenticity in a world dominated by imitation. The marathon also features 'Miermisericordi' by Dave Aidan, which delves into the struggles of loneliness, and 'No se lo digas a nadie' by Victoria Enguídanos, addressing the loss of innocence and trust in society.
