The Xunta de Galicia has allocated over €53,000 for improvements to the lighting and waste management systems at the Madanela industrial park in Melide. This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernise industrial infrastructures across the region.
Belén do Campo, the Xunta's delegate in A Coruña, visited the industrial park alongside Isidoro Martínez, the director of the Consellería de Economía e Industria, to assess the completed upgrades. The funding includes approximately €39,000 for public lighting renewal and over €14,000 for enhancing waste management.
The Madanela industrial park covers an area of 215,588 square metres and is home to 86 operational businesses, making it a key economic hub in the Tierra de Melide region. Do Campo praised the improvements, which aim to boost energy efficiency, enhance safety, and facilitate selective waste collection.
Energy savings and infrastructure upgrades
The lighting improvements involved replacing 36 sodium vapour lamps with more efficient and adjustable LED technology. The project also included renewing around 1,800 metres of damaged cabling, installing two 12-metre tall lighting columns, and upgrading the electrical control panels. The new lighting setup comprises 13 lamps of 100 watts, eight lamps of 60 watts, and 15 lamps of 50 watts, tailored to the park's requirements.
As a result of these changes, the estimated annual electricity consumption has decreased from 32,850 kilowatt-hours to 9,785.65 kilowatt-hours, representing a reduction of 70.21%. Additional upgrades were made to the electrical panels, including the replacement of differential switches with rearmable models and improvements to internal connections.
Enhanced waste management facilities
In addition to lighting upgrades, the Xunta has invested over €14,000 to improve waste management at the industrial park. This funding has expanded the available resources for selective waste collection in an area that already features a municipal recycling point but required additional containers.
A total of 23 new containers were installed, including ten blue containers with a three-cubic-metre capacity for paper and cardboard, and 13 yellow containers of 1,100 litres for plastic, metal, and brick packaging. Their strategic placement throughout the park, particularly near business entrances, encourages proper waste disposal and separation at the source.
These enhancements are expected to manage around 27 tonnes of paper and cardboard and approximately 159 tonnes of packaging annually, based on the planned collection frequencies. The improvements complement the existing services of the Melide recycling point, which accepts various waste types, including vegetable oils, construction debris, batteries, and large items like furniture and mattresses.
Support for industrial parks across Galicia
The upgrades at Madanela are part of the Xunta's 2026 funding initiative aimed at improving industrial park infrastructures throughout Galicia. This initiative has financed 53 projects across the region, with 22 grants awarded in A Coruña benefiting 19 industrial parks, totalling nearly €1.3 million.
Do Campo explained that these grants can cover up to 80% of eligible investments, with individual applications capped at €120,000 and joint applications at €138,000. This year's funding also allows for improvements to public spaces within industrial parks to enhance their integration into the landscape. Additionally, the grants support projects related to public lighting, wastewater treatment plants, waste management, road infrastructure, and centralised gas and hydrogen supply services.
The delegate emphasised the importance of supporting municipalities with operational industrial parks that require modernisation to provide better services to businesses and foster economic development.
