Tàrrega reopens municipal swimming pool and sports park

Tàrrega will reopen its municipal indoor swimming pool and the entire sports park on Monday, 27 April, after safety checks confirmed there is no risk of toxicity. The facilities were ventilated, and the chemical that caused the initial alarm has been safely removed.

Access restrictions to the sports park were lifted on Sunday evening. The park had been cordoned off since Friday as a precautionary measure after a chemical contamination incident was detected. Initial inspections on Saturday suggested serious damage to the machinery, but further evaluations confirmed that the facilities can operate normally.

In addition to the swimming pool, the gym will also resume activities. However, the sauna and Turkish bath will remain closed due to ongoing operational issues.

The reopening will allow activities to resume at the municipal pavilion, the two football fields, and the parking area, all of which were closed to the public over the weekend.

Mayor Rosa Maria Perelló and Sports Councillor Raül Arenas have been closely monitoring the situation and maintaining contact with emergency services, including firefighters and local police. They have also been in touch with the nine individuals who were injured during the incident, all of whom have since been discharged from medical care.

The chemical contamination was first detected on Friday at 10:50 AM, leading to the evacuation of around sixty users and staff from the facilities. Preliminary investigations indicated that the incident was caused by an accidental mixture of chlorine and an acid during water treatment, resulting in a chemical reaction and the release of toxic gases.
