The Ayuntamiento de Santander will commence construction on four covered tennis courts at the Ruth Beitia Complex in November. This project is designed to ensure suitable usage conditions year-round, maintain an infrastructure that serves thousands of users, and manage public resources responsibly in the medium to long term.
The renovation project is budgeted at €706,387 and is expected to take three months to complete. The construction schedule aims to minimise disruptions to sporting events as much as possible.
The comprehensive work will involve addressing the connections of the drainage systems at the entrance corridor, expanding the drainage pits and collectors to prevent water ingress onto the courts and properly channeling runoff to the sewage system, particularly during heavy rainfall. Additionally, a partial closure of the sides of courts 1 and 3 will be implemented to prevent water blown in by easterly winds, as this area lacks protection from the padel courts building. This measure will help avoid water entering the playing surface.
This intervention aims to enhance protection against rain, wind, and potential condensation, increase the structure's durability, and reduce maintenance costs, ultimately improving comfort for tennis players and reinforcing the complex's image in line with its usage levels. It will also extend the facility's lifespan and preserve municipal heritage.
The Ayuntamiento and the Instituto Municipal de Deportes are committed to ensuring that municipal sports facilities provide adequate conditions, functionality, and comfort, regardless of the weather.
Simultaneously with the roof construction on the tennis courts, the flooring will also be repaired. The surface will be renewed with several layers of resin. The complex features eight tennis courts, four outdoors and four covered. The covered courts were built in 2008 alongside two padel courts, and the playing surface of the tennis courts was renewed in 2018. Since then, the usage of the facility has remained consistently high, currently recording 45,000 uses by members through municipal tennis school activities for both adults and children, as well as federated competitions and events.
