This afternoon, the third deputy mayor and councillor for sports, Concepción Méndez, alongside Covadonga Díaz, the councillor for festivities, and Alfredo García, the councillor for tourism, attended the inauguration of the 29th international cuarentunas competition memorial jamín, held in the Plenary Hall of the City Hall.
Concepción Méndez welcomed the performers, expressing gratitude for their presence and conveying "on behalf of the city of Oviedo, the joy of hosting and sharing these days of music, camaraderie, and friendship. Oviedo is a city characterised by a profound university education, a city that preserves its traditions and understands culture as a means of bringing people together. Therefore, this event and competition perfectly align with our identity."
The tuna, a traditional Spanish musical group, embodies not only music but also a way of understanding life, friendship, companionship, generosity, humour, and the integrity of a community. It serves to keep alive roots without renouncing them while continuing to create memories and new stories. This cuarentunas event particularly represents this narrative, reminding us that enthusiasm knows no age and that passions, far from fading over time, deepen and gain even greater value. Each song carries a lived experience, each encounter fosters a friendship, and each performance involves many hours of dedication, effort, and, above all, affection for our companions.
During these days, Oviedo will be a meeting point for people arriving from various places, all sharing the same language of music and friendship. This is undoubtedly one of the great virtues of culture: its ability to unite us and remind us of our commonalities," highlighted the third deputy mayor.
A notable moment of the event was the organisation's appointment of Covadonga Díaz as the patroness of the 29th edition of the competition. She expressed her "gratitude and emotion" upon receiving an exclusive brooch from the International Federation of Cuarentunas on behalf of all attendees.
Finally, from the balcony of the Plenary Hall, Covadonga Díaz addressed the hundreds of performers gathered in Plaza de la Constitución, officially inaugurating the 29th international cuarentunas competition memorial jamín with the performance of "Clavelitos."
