Renowned pastry chef Raúl Asencio is set to receive the gastro cinema prize this year, a recognition that celebrates his professional journey marked by creativity, commitment to quality, and the preservation of culinary traditions linked to the region. Juan de Dios Navarro, the cultural deputy, announced the details of the award this morning, which aims to highlight the contributions of associations, entities, and businesses that significantly enhance social progress and the well-being of citizens.
Promoted by the Diputación de Alicante, the award is part of the Gastro Cinema Festival, a cultural event that has established itself as a key gathering in the national scene. The eighth edition of the festival will take place from 13 to 19 November, featuring a diverse programme where film and gastronomy will share the spotlight through screenings, culinary proposals, tastings, and cultural encounters.
During the announcement, Navarro emphasised the importance of supporting initiatives that value culture and talent, stating, “At the Diputación, we want to continue backing projects that enrich our cultural and gastronomic offerings and recognise the work of professionals who help preserve and promote our identity.”
Navarro was joined by the festival director, Vicente Seva, and Asencio himself, who expressed gratitude for the award and pride in the province of Alicante and its rich culinary heritage. He acknowledged the entire team at his bakery in Aspe, describing them as “a great family whose effort and dedication have made the Asencio name a national reference in pastry.”
Seva remarked, “This year we recognise the career of a master pastry chef who has transformed a century-old family tradition into a benchmark for high-end pastry. With this award, we aim to highlight the talent of our land, respect for artisanal craftsmanship, and the ability to innovate without losing our roots. His work demonstrates that Alicante's flavours and products can transcend borders and achieve significant international recognition.”
Raúl Asencio, from Aspe, is the seventh generation of a pastry-making family with roots dating back to the 18th century. He has turned his bakery into a leading establishment for artisanal high-end pastry, with panettone as its signature product. His mastery of natural sourdough and commitment to slow fermentation processes lasting over four days, without preservatives or additives, have garnered him international acclaim, including a medal at the Miglior Panettone del Mondo competition held in Rome.
Staying true to tradition while adopting a creative approach, Asencio has incorporated local flavours into his creations, such as the Vinalopó bagged grape and Jijona nougat, alongside classic fruit and chocolate versions. From his bakery in Aspe, he combines respect for traditional techniques with an international outlook, bringing his artisanal panettones to tables across Spain and Europe.
The Gastro Cinema Festival continues its tradition of recognising prominent figures in Alicante's gastronomy; previous recipients include chefs such as Kiko Moya (Cocentaina), Susi Díaz (Elche), Mª Carmen Vélez (Petrer), María José San Román, and Dani Frías (Alicante), Cristina Figueira (La Nucía), and Nazario Cano (Moraira), solidifying its status as a hallmark of culinary excellence in the region.
