Barcelona cellist Pau Codina, a member of the Esbjerg Ensemble and Trio Fortuny, will perform Bach's suites No. 3 and 4 this Sunday, 25 October, at 12 noon. The concert will take place at l’Espai de la Plana de l’Om as part of a series dedicated to Johann Sebastian Bach's 'Suites for Solo Cello', coinciding with the celebration of the Year of Pau Casals.
The six suites for solo cello by J.S. Bach (1685–1750) are considered fundamental to the instrument's repertoire. Since Pau Casals made the first complete recording between 1936 and 1939 during the Spanish Civil War, these works have continued to inspire generations of cellists worldwide.
This concert follows a recent performance by cellist Amat Santacana, who played Bach's Suites No. 1 and 6. Audiences will once again experience the brilliance of J.S. Bach, with Codina's interpretation of Suites No. 3 and 4. Additionally, he will perform 'Tombeau' by J. Magrané between the two suites.
Pau Codina has built a distinguished career as both a soloist and chamber musician, performing across Europe with prestigious ensembles such as the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra, Orchestre de Chambre de Wallonie, OBC, Franz Schubert Philharmonia, and the National Orchestra of Belgium. He has also served as principal cellist with renowned groups like the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.
Born in Barcelona in 1988, Codina began playing the cello at the age of five and has since received numerous awards in international competitions, including the Guilhermina Suggia Award, the Kronberg Cello Festival Schlosskonzert Prize, and first prize at the Permanent Competition of Juventudes Musicales de España.
Tickets for the concert are priced at €15 (with discounts of €10 for seniors over 65 and Carnet Galliner holders, and €6 for those under 30). They can be purchased at the box office and online, with additional tickets available one hour before the concert at l’Espai Plana de l’Om. The concert series will conclude on 8 November with Catalan-Swiss cellist Ariadna Chmelik, a member of Quartet Atenea, performing Suites No. 2 and 5 by Bach.
