The Manuel Torres Municipal Museum has opened the exhibition 'Castrexa ceramics in Galicia: research and recovery', which began on 30 October. This showcase offers insights into the material culture of the ancient inhabitants of the Galician castros through a collection of ceramic reproductions sourced from 30 archaeological sites across Galicia.
The exhibition arrives in Marín through the collaboration of the Terra Termarum Castrolandín Foundation, as part of the Trazas de Pontevedra programme, promoted by the Pontevedra Provincial Council via Turismo Rías Baixas. Visitors can explore the exhibition until 30 November.
Among the displayed pieces is a reproduction from the Castro da Subidá, establishing a direct connection between the archaeological heritage of Marín and the broader castrexa culture of Galicia. This exhibition stems from a project initiated in 2005 by the Terra Termarum Castrolandín Foundation, focusing on the research and recovery of castrexa ceramics based on artefacts discovered during archaeological excavations at the Castro de Castrolandín in Cuntis.
The initial aim was to study the techniques, shapes, decorations, and production processes of ceramic pieces used during the Iron Age, allowing for their reproduction through experimental archaeology techniques. In 2011, the project expanded its scope to encompass all of Galicia, resulting in a research initiative that successfully recovered a representative collection of ceramics from the main castrexos settlements in the region.
As part of the complementary programming, a conference will take place on 5 November at 19:30 at the Museum, featuring two specialists involved in the research and dissemination of this heritage. Mar Cortegoso Comesaña, an archaeologist and author of the research project's report, will discuss the origins, evolution, and outcomes of this work, along with the process of recovering archaeological pieces. She will be joined by Elena Cabrejas Domínguez, an archaeologist and research technician at the Institute of Heritage Sciences of the CSIC, who will focus on the recent inscription of a mark associated with castrexa ceramics.
The exhibition 'Castrexa ceramics in Galicia: research and recovery' can be visited until 30 November at the Manuel Torres Municipal Museum, with opening hours from Tuesday to Friday, 11:00 to 14:00 and 18:00 to 21:00; Saturdays and Sundays, 11:00 to 14:00; closed on Mondays and public holidays.
