The city of Murcia has organised a sports day in Puente Tocinos as part of its twinning activities with the Italian city of Genoa, bringing together players from both locations.
The event took place from 09:00 to 14:30 at the Pavilion and the Outdoor Court of Puente Tocinos, designed to promote coexistence, camaraderie, and cultural exchange through sport. Four teams, each comprising seven players, participated in the tournament, which included a mix of one player from Genoa and three from Murcia, encouraging interaction among athletes from both cities.
Mercedes Bernabé, the councillor for Open Government, emphasised the importance of such initiatives, stating, "From the City Council of Murcia, we want our twinnings to be much more than institutional agreements. We want them to translate into shared experiences, personal relationships, and opportunities for our citizens to get to know each other and establish lasting friendships."
The matches were played in two halves of 20 minutes, with teams consisting of five players and two substitutes. The twinning between Murcia and Genoa is rooted in historical cultural, commercial, and social ties that have connected the two cities for centuries. This partnership began in 2018 and was officially approved in 2019, leading to various initiatives for cooperation and exchange in areas such as culture and citizen participation. Both cities have also engaged in European projects, such as SISTER, to strengthen their institutional relationships and enhance mutual understanding.
