Defence hub in extremadura progresses towards establishment as a business association

The Junta de Extremadura, through its Ministry of Economy, Employment and Digital Transformation, is advancing a series of technical visits to local companies as part of the initiative to establish a specialised hub for defence, security, and reconstruction. This Defence Business Hub is one of the key projects outlined in Baluartia, the Regional Boost Plan for the Defence Business Sector.

The hub aims to encourage the involvement of Extremaduran companies in activities related to defence and security, as well as to develop technological, industrial, and training capabilities in these fields. It will be established as a private, non-profit association comprising companies and knowledge centres capable of engaging in activities within these sectors.

Objectives and benefits

Among its objectives, the hub seeks to facilitate the integration and growth of Extremaduran companies within defence-related supply chains. This includes providing access to contracts, certifications, innovation projects, specialised training, and talent acquisition.

Technical visits to local companies

As part of this initiative, the Junta is conducting a series of technical visits to showcase the project and assess the capabilities, needs, and participation possibilities of local businesses in the defence sector. Notable companies visited include Rheinmetall, which anticipates a 30% growth in employment, investment, and activity by 2027, surpassing 450 employees and increasing production volume by 35%. The company plans to invest approximately €8 million in 2026 and €9 million in 2027.

Another company, Grupo Render, reported a turnover nearing €40 million, with 60% derived from defence activities. This firm focuses on specialised industrial construction and is involved in strategic infrastructure projects, such as hangars and complex buildings, with a growth plan aiming for €100 million in revenue by 2031.

Modum Ingenieros, which specialises in industrial engineering and automation systems, was also part of the visits. The company is a Tier 2 supplier in the defence supply chain and aims to transition to Tier 1 status by 2027 by obtaining the PECAL 2110 certification, enhancing its eligibility for more significant roles in electronic combat systems integration projects.

Establishment and operational timeline

The establishment process for the hub is currently underway. It will feature its own governance structure and will focus on fostering cooperation among companies and knowledge centres, as well as their participation in opportunities within the defence, security, and reconstruction sectors. The founding assembly is scheduled for late 2026 or early 2027, with the goal of having the hub fully operational by the first quarter of 2027.
