Huelva council approves conversion of building into hotel

The Huelva council has authorised the change of use for part of the building that once housed the Osorno Toy Store, located at number 1 on Calle Tres de Agosto, to be converted into a hotel. This decision follows the receipt of a favourable environmental assessment and allows progress on a project that includes the rehabilitation and adaptation of the property.

The future hotel will comprise 13 accommodation units, with a maximum capacity of 35 guests, and will cover a total constructed area of 425 square metres across the ground, first and second floors. The ground floor will retain its commercial use, serving as the entrance to the hotel.

Felipe Arias, the first deputy mayor for Urbanism and Environment, emphasised the council's commitment to supporting investors and facilitating the realisation of their projects. He stated, “Every new economic activity brings opportunities for Huelva, creating jobs and new services for the community.”

Arias also noted that transforming a central building into a hotel contributes to the revitalisation and new uses of the city's urban heritage while enhancing Huelva's tourism offerings. He remarked, “Tourism is one of Huelva's key strategies for generating wealth and employment, and we are working to provide reasons for visitors to come year-round, from promoting our archaeological heritage and British legacy to rehabilitating buildings and developing increasingly attractive cultural and leisure programmes.”

The project includes interventions on the first and second floors, with a partial extension on the third floor. The hotel will feature a reception area, communal spaces, a shared kitchen, laundry facilities, a gym, and terraces. Accessibility measures will also be implemented, including an adapted lift for connecting the different floors and accessible routes, accommodations, and sanitary facilities.

While the urban planning authorisation has been granted, it does not yet allow for the commencement of construction. The promoting company, OSORNO SL, must submit a duly approved execution project along with the necessary documentation to begin work. Once these requirements are met, the timeline stipulates a maximum of six months to start the construction and 18 months for its complete execution.
