Moralzarzal approves local holidays for 2027

The council of Moralzarzal has approved the local holidays for 2027, designating 3 May and 23 September as official days of celebration. This decision was made during a council meeting held on 5 November 2026, with backing from several political groups.

The proposal was supported by the Popular Party (PP) with seven votes, alongside one from Contigo, two from the Socialist Party (PSOE), and one from VOX. In contrast, the VMP party voted against the proposal with four votes, while one member from the Municipal Electoral Coalition (MEC) and an independent councillor abstained.

3 May: Fiesta de la Cruz de Mayo

The first holiday, 3 May, is celebrated as the Fiesta de la Cruz de Mayo, a cherished event in Moralzarzal. The Parque de La Tejera will be the focal point for this traditional day, attracting thousands of residents and visitors for a family-friendly picnic. This celebration combines devotion, popular gastronomy, and a homage to the town's historical stone masonry.

The significance of the Cruz de Mayo is deeply rooted in the local economy and culture, as stone masonry was a key industry in the area until the late 20th century. Although the last stone workshops ceased operations in the early 1980s, their legacy continues to resonate during this festival. The day features a lively atmosphere with a traditional horse pilgrimage, a Mass at the park's chapel, children's activities, and musical performances. Attendees can enjoy complimentary tastings of local delicacies such as panceta, chorizo, and sardines, thanks to the efforts of local volunteers.

23 September: La Semana Grande de la Sierra

The second holiday, 23 September, marks the beginning of the Fiestas Patronales, popularly known as “La Semana Grande de la Sierra.” This day has historically been the most significant festive occasion in Moralzarzal, honouring the town's patrons, the Virgen del Rosario and San Miguel Arcángel.

The celebrations commence with a Mass and a procession, followed by a public announcement in the Plaza de la Constitución. The opening day is filled with free snacks for attendees, alongside various children's activities and musical events throughout the day.
