Colindres hosts fifth international congress on the ancient world

The Mayor of Colindres, Javier Incera, and the Councillor for Education and Environment, Yolanda Arce, alongside Ana Rosa Martín and José Nicolás Saiz from UNED Cantabria, presented the fifth International and Multidisciplinary Congress on the Ancient World (CIMMA 2026). This event is taking place from 22 to 24 October at the UNED Cantabria Collaboration Centre.

Approximately 120 participants, both in-person and online, are attending the congress. The inaugural lecture, titled “Tardes de fiesta” (Afternoon Parties), was delivered by Juan Manuel Abascal, a professor at the University of Alicante, and introduced by Ramón Teja, a professor of Ancient History at the University of Cantabria.

Funded by the Colindres City Council, the congress operates under the theme “Leisure and Business in Antiquity.” Thanks to the collaboration between the institutions, residents of Colindres can participate free of charge, enhancing access to this academic initiative.

Since 2022, CIMMA has been held in Colindres, establishing the municipality as a hub for experts studying the ancient world. This year, the congress focuses on how public spectacles and leisure coexisted with economic activities in civilisations such as the Near East, Egypt, Greece, and Rome.

The congress offers both in-person and online participation options, allowing greater inclusion of researchers from various locations. Additionally, presented works may be eligible for scientific publication, contributing to the dissemination of knowledge in this field.
