The mayor urges citizens to conserve water amid a 'very severe' drought and demands the regional government to act 'immediately'.

Vigo mayor warns of historic low water levels at Eiras reservoir and calls for immediate action

On October 7, 2026, the mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero, expressed serious concerns regarding the water levels at the Eiras reservoir, which are currently at their lowest historical point for this time of year. Despite light rainfall in recent days, the reservoir's levels are significantly below those recorded in 2011 and 2017.

“We have a serious problem. We are still facing a severe drought,” Caballero warned. He called on the Xunta de Galicia, the regional government, to immediately reduce the ecological flow of the Eiras reservoir due to the declining water reserves. “The Consellería must lower the ecological flow immediately, as the threat of water scarcity is severe, very severe,” he stated.

The mayor also urged citizens to maintain responsible water consumption and to minimize household water usage, expressing gratitude for the efforts already being made. He noted that industries have also reduced their water consumption “to the minimum possible” and emphasized the need to continue saving water.

Caballero reiterated that the current situation necessitates decisive action in response to the decreasing reserves and held the Xunta responsible for addressing the ecological flow issue. “The city is saving as much as it can, and I am very grateful for that, but the Xunta must lower the ecological flow immediately,” he concluded.
