Castilla-La Mancha thanks El Roto for donating 301 artworks

The regional government of Castilla-La Mancha has publicly thanked renowned artist Andrés Rábago, better known as El Roto, for his generous donation of 301 artworks, including drawings and oil paintings, to the autonomous community.

Amador Pastor, the regional Minister of Education, Culture and Sports, highlighted that this significant contribution will enrich the artistic heritage of Castilla-La Mancha and enable the public to appreciate the work of one of Spain's leading figures in graphic humour and contemporary artistic creation.

The president of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page, has signed an agreement with El Roto, formalising the transfer of these 301 pieces, valued at more than two million euros, to the region's artistic collection. Pastor remarked that this agreement represents a substantial boost to the cultural resources of the region and will bring the legacy of one of Spain's most prominent contemporary artists closer to the public.

The donated works encompass all three creative facets of Andrés Rábago: his early work as OPS, his well-known pieces as El Roto, and his paintings created under his own name. Through his drawings and graphic humour, El Roto has crafted a critical, ironic, and engaged perspective on Spanish society and its transformations over the past decades. His oil paintings, on the other hand, reflect a more introspective and contemplative side, characterised by a search for light, silence, and reflection on the human condition.

Born in Madrid in 1947, El Roto is a prominent figure in Spanish graphic humour and illustration. He began his professional career during the final years of Franco's regime under the pseudonym OPS, producing surrealistic drawings with a strong social critique. He later adopted the name El Roto, through which he has built an extensive career in media outlets such as Diario 16 and El País, becoming one of the most recognisable voices in Spanish graphic journalism. Concurrently, he has pursued painting under his own name, developing a body of work that is symbolic and contemplative. Throughout his career, he has received numerous accolades, including the National Illustration Award in 2012, recognising his contributions to culture and critical thought.
