Barcelona hosts first international gaudí congress to commemorate architect's centenary

The Gaudí International Congress 2026 has been inaugurated by the Catalan Minister of Culture, Sònia Hernández, and is taking place from 22 to 25 October in Barcelona. This congress brings together experts, researchers, and professionals worldwide to analyse the legacy and impact of Antoni Gaudí, showcasing more than 40 scientific contributions from emerging researchers.

Held at the Auditorio de La Pedrera – Casa Milà, the congress is the first scientific event of its kind dedicated to Gaudí and is set to occur every three years. Over four days, specialists will share new research and critical reviews of the universal architect's work.

Hernández emphasised the congress's “international dimension,” aligning it with other initiatives of the Gaudí Year, and highlighted its role in “explaining the scientific dimension of Gaudí's work.” She also celebrated the event's potential to “open new avenues of research” and engage new generations of scholars.

The presented research is entirely original and has not been published before. The congress aims to be a forward-looking initiative, with a scientific committee composed of leading experts seeking to create an international research network focused on Gaudí.

The programme includes three main thematic blocks: Project, technique and conservation; History, theory and documentation; and Communication, values and contemporary projection. More than 40 articles will be presented by authors from Europe, Asia, and America, with 29% of them coming from abroad.

The Gaudí Year, themed “L’Ordre invisible,” commemorates the centenary of Antoni Gaudí's death (1852-1926) and aims to provide a new perspective on his work. The Generalitat of Catalonia has allocated €6.5 million to this commemoration, which has been declared an Event of Special Public Interest by the Ministry of Culture of Spain.
