The winter season at Asturias airport has commenced with a schedule of 22 regular destinations, comprising 14 domestic and eight international routes, running until the last week of March. This season's offerings include new connections and enhancements to several routes, aimed at improving accessibility during the quieter months for tourism.
The Government of Asturias' Air Connectivity Strategy continues to foster communications with other regions, boosting both tourism and the economic profile of the community. A notable addition this season is the arrival of Wizz Air, which has launched a direct connection to Luton Airport in London this week. This European airline, which has significant growth potential, becomes the tenth airline to operate at Asturias airport, expanding travel options to the United Kingdom.
The London-Luton route will operate three times a week during the winter season, specifically on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. These flights will continue year-round, utilising aircraft with a capacity of 239 seats. Luton Airport serves as a key operational base for Wizz Air, offering direct connections to over 70 destinations, thereby enhancing travel opportunities from Asturias through subsequent links.
Wizz Air's expansion will continue in the coming weeks, with plans to introduce two additional routes. In the first week of November, the airline aims to start four weekly flights to Madrid (on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays) and five to Valencia. These connections will bolster national travel options and provide greater accessibility for the Asturian population.
Expanded national and international offerings
The new winter schedule features a robust selection of national destinations, including Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante, Mallorca, Seville, Málaga, Jerez, and Granada, alongside Tenerife North, Tenerife South, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura. Internationally, passengers can fly to London, Paris, Milan, Rome, Florence, Porto, Lisbon, and Brussels, strengthening Asturias' ties with key tourist markets and culturally significant cities.
The winter programme also highlights enhancements to domestic operations, with increased flights to the Canary Islands through Binter and Vueling, and up to twelve weekly departures to Valencia, thanks to Wizz Air's involvement. Additionally, year-round connections to Jerez, Porto, and Florence will be operated by Volotea, providing improved travel options beyond the peak season.
The route to Madrid will feature services from four operators this season. Air Europa, which began offering two daily flights in June, continues its connection to its international hub, facilitating travel to America. Iberia and Air Nostrum are also increasing their capacity to the Spanish capital, while Wizz Air will add four weekly flights, with Volotea resuming its operations from 8 January.
Looking ahead to summer 2027
The winter programme is part of the ongoing efforts by the Principality's government to consolidate and enhance air connectivity, improve communications with major markets, and encourage visitor arrivals throughout the year. Airlines are already planning for next summer, with Asturias airport set to offer 30 destinations for sale. The positive outcomes of the Air Connectivity Strategy are reflected in record figures for the Asturian terminal. According to the latest data from Aena, Santiago del Monte airport recorded 1,730,498 passengers from January to September, a 10.9% increase compared to the same period last year, significantly outpacing the Spanish airport network's average growth of 4.1%. In September alone, the Asturian terminal welcomed 217,285 travellers, marking a 13.6% rise compared to September 2025.
