Alicante city council initiates restoration works at Albacar d' Enmig in Santa Bárbara Castle

The local government of Alicante has approved the tender for restoration works at the Albacar d' Enmig, located within the historic Santa Bárbara Castle. The project, which has a budget of €143,672, is expected to be completed within five months.

The restoration will focus on the main wall, the lower sections of the Torre de Santa Caterina, Torre de Coloma, and the Poterna, including its internal staircase and the bridge over the moat that provides access to the site. The area of intervention covers approximately 600 square metres.

Infrastructure councillor Cristina García emphasised the ongoing efforts to enhance the fortress, following the rehabilitation of the Santa Ana bastion and the upcoming opening of a renovated path from the Ereta. She also noted that the restoration of the western wall is being supported by the Hortensia Herrero Foundation.

The moat of Albacar d' Enmig plays a crucial defensive role within the castle's wall system. Historically, it served to separate and protect different levels of the fortress, aiding in defence should an enemy breach the outer walls.

The objective of the restoration works includes the consolidation of the wall structures, restoration of various architectural features such as stonework, masonry, and rammed earth, as well as reopening restricted areas to the public. Additionally, the project aims to restore the upper floor of the Torre Santa Caterina for public use and repair the sewage network in the area.

Designed by architect Jaime Giner, the project has received approval from the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage of the Conselleria de Cultura, as it involves a site classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC), or Asset of Cultural Interest.
