A Coruña is set to become a focal point for opera this week with the arrival of 'Tosca', composed by Giacomo Puccini, one of the most celebrated and popular operas in history. The performances are scheduled for 22 and 24 October at the Palacio de la Ópera, as part of the 74th Lyric Season organised by Amigos de la Ópera with the support of the A Coruña City Council.
The production will feature the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia, the Coro Gaos, and the Coro Cantabile, marking one of the highlights of the city's cultural programme this autumn. A Coruña's mayor, Inés Rey, emphasised the significance of the city continuing to host major lyrical productions through a historic entity like Amigos de la Ópera. "The Lyric Season is part of A Coruña's cultural identity and represents one of the most prestigious programmes in the Galician and national music scene. The city can be proud to have an initiative that has been bringing artistic excellence to the public for decades and projecting A Coruña's name as a cultural reference," she stated.
'Tosca', which premiered in Rome in 1900, is regarded as a cornerstone of the global operatic repertoire. Its dramatic intensity, the strength of its characters, and some of the most renowned arias in music history have made it one of the most frequently performed works in major theatres worldwide. The mayor also highlighted the contributions of Amigos de la Ópera over its more than seventy years of activity. "We are talking about an entity that is part of A Coruña's cultural heritage. Its ability to attract top-tier productions and to keep the city's operatic tradition alive makes it an essential reference for several generations of audiences," she affirmed.
The performance of 'Tosca' is the second major title of this year's Lyric Season, which is celebrating its 74th edition and features a programme that combines grand operatic productions with educational and inclusive activities aimed at diverse audiences.
