Alberto Nadal highlights inflation issues in Spain during Jaén visit

The deputy secretary of Economy and Sustainable Development for the People's Party, Alberto Nadal, has expressed concerns regarding Spain's inflation, which has remained above that of neighbouring European countries for the past 17 months. Current figures indicate a national inflation rate of 4.9%, with harmonised European figures at 5%. Nadal pointed out that inflation in Europe is 1.2 percentage points lower than in Spain, which he argues reflects poor economic management.

“This ultimately leads to a loss of purchasing power for families. The cost of the shopping basket has increased by over 40% since Sánchez took office,” Nadal stated, highlighting that essential items such as meat and eggs have nearly doubled in price during this period.

Nadal emphasised that the rising costs particularly impact families with children and those on lower incomes, for whom the cost of living is a significant burden. He also noted that taxes have been raised to unprecedented levels, with an additional €200 billion collected since Sánchez's government began, alongside a public debt increase of €500 billion that all Spaniards will have to repay.

In his remarks to the media before meetings with various associations, including builders and lawyers at the Jaén Fair, Nadal called for an end to the “isolation” caused by inadequate infrastructure in Jaén and other regions, which contributes to economic disparities across Spain. He concluded by stressing the need for policies that enhance productivity, living standards, and wages through necessary public and private investments.
